Aur Cymru – Welsh Gold

January 4, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

In Ancient times, battles were fought here. An unforgiving area with a single vantage point to be fought over. And to the south, the site of the burial cairns for those who’d never fight again.

In later times, farming become the way of life with people flocking to the area to farm its lush pastures and to take advantage of it’s clean, clear water supply. To this day those day, remnants of those settlements can still be seen.

And people still visit the area. Not to fight, or to farm, but to delight in the products of that same water supply………….

This is an gentle walk, designed to ease you out of the excesses of the Festive Period, and into our 2020 programme of events. There is a small charge of around £10 for reasons you’re about to read. It’s also a great opportunity for those that want to practice their micro navigation

Walk Leader : Huw Jones

Distance : 7Km
Total Ascent : 195m

We’ll begin by ferrying you from the meeting point to the walk start point, just up the road. From there we’ll make our way through a stone quarry and around to the North East of Cadair Fawr to visit the remains of an ancient settlement, before summiting that vantage point.

From there we’ll make our way down to the former battlefield, talking the opportunity to visit strange rock formations, cairns and some of the most dramatic sink holes you’ll ever see as we work our way back to the cars.

And on. To the Penderyn Whisky Distillery for a tour (hence the charge – £10 payable to Penderyn Whisky) of what those waters are used for these days. We’ll spend a delightful hour or two seeing how this Welsh Gold is made, perhaps sampling some, and definitely sampling the factory shop there. And of course for those who need their electrolytes replaced there’ll be a final waypoint at SN 94612 06911

Join us! For a warming introduction to 2020.
